There’s a certain persistence found in all things.
No matter the scale, there’s an unspoken rule that we must follow where the waves lead and continuously rush to shore. So, I sit here with my feet dangling over the many fish in the lake. Waterbugs and not-so-fortunate trapped winged bugs float atop the greenish murky water. The sun’s heat gives me goosebumps as my dark, thick, wavy hair begins to heat up.
I am exploring what Americana means to me, incorporating my Texas upbringing, Indigenous heritage, and currently living in the Deep South. I connect with familial ties and the land by rendering and depicting my own experiences in bucolic scenes.
Oscillating between history, location, and experience, I create intimate and ephemeral scenes interpreted through my unique cultural lens. To blur the lines between the earthly and the metaphysical, I stylize and obscure both the body and the space it exists in, creating compositions that are grounded yet otherworldly
The process of oil painting enables me to incorporate allusions to historical practices, techniques, and allegories, ranging from Baroque to Regionalism, which are then reconfigured. My practice elevates earnest experiences into an illusion; the illusion allows a personal perspective to transcend its origins. Furthermore, I continue to create sumptuously sincere work to allow the viewer to slow down and appreciate the minutiae of another’s viewpoint.
